Which Hostelworld Bookings Are Refundable?

When booking through Hostelworld.com, you pay a booking deposit fee at the time of reservation - which is usually about 15% of your total booking cost. The remainder of your payment is due when you arrive at check-in. Your ability to get a refund on your booking deposit will depend on the type of booking you make. Here are the three types of cancellation policies:

Free Cancellation Booking

Your booking deposit will be refunded if you cancel your booking at least 24 hours prior to check-in time.

Standard Flexible Booking

Your booking deposit will be refunded if you cancel your booking at least 24 hours prior to check-in time.

Non-Refundable Booking

Your booking deposit will not be refunded, no matter when you cancel your booking.

How Hostelworld Refunds Customers

On Hostelworld, refunds are issued in the form of a voucher, which is applicable towards future bookings on the site. You can access vouchers under the “My Account” section in your account. Vouchers are valid for 6 months from issuance, and have no cash value outside Hostelworld.com (meaning you can’t transfer it to your bank account).

How Long It Takes To Get Your Refund

Expect refund vouchers to arrive in your Hostelworld account within 10 days from their date of issuance - though it can take longer. If you do not receive your voucher within that timeframe, contact Hostelworld.

Can You Get A Refund On A Non-Refundable Booking?

If you cancel a Non-Refundable Booking, you will lose the booking deposit and be charged the full remaining cost of your booking.

If you think your situation warrants a refund, explain this to Hostelworld and the host. In some cases, you’ll be granted a full or partial refund - but don’t expect it!

Can I Get A Refund On My Booking Deposit?

Booking deposits for Free Cancellation and Standard Flexible Bookings are refundable if cancelled before its “cancel by” date (typically 24 hours before check-in).

Some hosts are more strict though (the date is earlier), due to various factors, like seasonality, occupancy rate, local competition, or host preference. To see the host’s cancellation policy, click “View House Rules” under the Property Description section of their listing.
